SKILLS & SCRIMMAGE CLASSES
What Will Players Learn From Our Skills & Scrimmage Classes?

BASKETBALL RULES
Before beginning to play the game all players need to know the rules of basketball. The first rule of basketball, pertains to how you dribble the basketball. There are certain basic dos and don’ts that need to be followed, when it comes to basketball for kids. We will cover all basic rules with the players such as foot pivoting, double dribble, up and down, traveling, fouls, two step rule, carrying, out of bounds, backcourt violations and much more.

SCRIMMAGE MATCHES
Now the most fun part! Most of your players, if not all, prefer playing the game over the alternative - drills and instruction. It’s a rare practice where we don’t hear one of our young players ask, “Are we going to scrimmage tonight?” Even if we always scrimmage, the question is asked by players to try and get more scrimmage time! Let’s begin by defining what scrimmage time is. Basketball scrimmages are simply 5-on-5 full court games during practice. These games could be unstructured, or the coach could expect the players to execute the team’s offensive and defensive systems. While some coaches want few stoppages during this time, our coaches from time to time will blow the whistle frequently to make corrections.

SHOOTING
The proper shooting technique involves the shooter focusing on their stance, how they hold the ball, aiming the ball, releasing the ball, and then their follow through.  At Jumpshot Basketball Academy, we put serious focus into developing your child’s shooting form through our experienced coaches.  Bending your knees and elbow to shoot the ball are important as well as aiming at the back at the ring.  The arm should extend as you release the ball with the follow through to be smooth and then held for a short time. Once comfortable with shooting the ball, consistency in hitting shots can be developed through these simple basketball drills at home and at Jumpshot Basketball Academy.

DRIBBLING
Dribbling in basketball is used to advance the ball up the court, take on the defence to get to the hoop and to get away from opponents into free space.  Ideally a player wants to dribble with their best hand, however, we at Jumpshot Basketball Academy will teach them how to dribble with both hands (but this takes alot of practice).  Also, we will work on if they are able to make moves with the ball without looking at it - which is very important in basketball. When undergoing these drills, the player needs to focus on pushing the ball towards the floor with force and then being able to control it through spread fingertips.  The ball should stay at hip height or below and the player’s focus needs to be up and forward, not on the ball. Ball control skills are an integral part of youth basketball skill development; all players need to feel comfortable with the ball when playing basketball and this can be achieved by handling the ball as much as possible.

Picture
CATCHING & PASSING
Passing the basketball with other players can be great to improve a players passing skills.  When passing, a player needs to focus on spreading their fingers to improve ball control.  Also, ‘snapping’ the wrist to pass the ball quickly.  Then having an athletic stance to pass the ball with control and power.  Remember that your feet should be shoulder width apart; knees, hips and back bent.  Use widespread fingers and outstretched arms to catch the ball too. And most importantly, always keep your eye on the ball! Some five simple passes we will work on: Overhead Pass, One Hand Pass, Two Handed Pass, Chest Pass and Bounce Pass.

FREE THROWS
Shooting from the free throw line is a great way to make that shot form consistent and to then build confidence in making shots.  The free throw line distance is about 15 feet from the backboard which is used in games once kids reach the age group of under 10/12.  Will ensure that each player does not to step over the free throw line until the ball has hit the ring as that’s a rule in the game!

Picture
REBOUNDS
Players should always “follow the shot” when shooting in case the ball does not go in so that they can be in a good position to contend for a rebound. Rebounding is all about positioning; as soon as a shot goes up, the defensive player should turn, facing the basket to watch where the ball goes, while being aware of the offense player, aiming to keep them away from the ball.

Picture
DEFENCE
In this defense strategy, each player is assigned to guard a player on the other team. When playing, the defensive player simply follows wherever his or her offensive player goes, limiting their opportunities to shoot, rebound, and pass to teammates. The easiest way to teach players to keep track of who they are guarding is by memorising the opposing player’s jersey number. The advantage of this defence strategy is that it is easy for players to ensure the other team is covered and enables the defensive team to put effective pressure on the offensive. The disadvantage mainly lies where players are mismatched, and slower or weaker defenders may have trouble keeping up with their offensive opponents. Zone defense is a strategy in which each player covers a specific area of the court, and the defender begins to guard an opponent when the opponent enters the defender’s designated zone. Once the offensive player leaves the defender’s zone, the defender continues guarding their zone instead of following the offensive player as they would in a man-to-man defense.

LAYUPS
Young basketball players need to practice lots of layups using both hands. Players should be taught to perform layups with both hands and taught to jump off the right foot. When they are shooting with the right hand, they should jump off the left leg and vice versa. Layups are one of the most basic skills for young players. Players need to practice a lot of layups using both of their hands when they do this. This will help them to develop the use of both of their hands really well. A lot of players (including professionals) end up with one dominant hand and will have to train specifically to improve their off-hand. We will do kids a lot of good when we teach them to make layups with both of their hands. As they master layups, they can also begin to master some basic legwork. Start close to the basketball and then get them to make layups from further out.

Teamwork, sportsmanship, athleticism, a healthy lifestyle, balance, patience and perseverance, the essential lifelong skills that only sports can teach, are lost on far too many kids today. Jumpshot Basketball Academy teaches how to win and lose and, most importantly, how to have FUN! The distraction of countless television channels, video games and web sites make it very difficult for kids to get out and just be allowed to be kids! Sadly for many, the repercussions of a childhood spent on the couch, with such passive pursuits, may last a lifetime. Our boys and girls youth basketball for kids classes in Victoria BC are a way for youth to improve their basketballs skills, build healthy relationships and most importantly, have fun! Each class is scheduled for one to two hours per week and is an exceptional way to train with our instructors and learn on basic basketball fundamentals. You will see your children gain an improved positive attitude, greater appreciation for good moral values, and a better understanding of the fundamentals of basketball that will lead to their own success and growth. The sport of basketball is not difficult to learn, and most importantly it is a way for children to have fun and at the same time build a level of self confidence that will stay with your child for years to come.
